Widely known as Sports City, the nearby complex featuring the Chang Arena and Buriram International Circuit is unique in Thailand and has all the characteristics of a theme park for sport lovers.
Developing a “Sport City” is an important strategy for Thailand as it continues to expand its sports industry to complement the country’s already successful tourism package. Enhancing a city through sport may be a challenge, but Buriram has proved that the results justify the means. And, as well as the city’s success, the surrounding province has also seen tremendous development in infrastructure.
Thailand’s first ever FIA Grade 1 track, the Buriram International Circuit was designed by world-famous track architect Hermann Tilke and opened in 2014. The 4.5km circuit regularly hosts MotoGP, SuperGT, World Super Bike, the Asian Le Mans Series and World Touring Championship events.
Originally founded in 1970 as Provincial Electricity Authority F.C., today Buriram United F.C. is one of the biggest teams in Asia and was the first team to win all three domestic cups in one season. The Thunder Castle regularly hosts matches from both the AFC and ASEAN Cup and, with a capacity of over 32,000, visitors can be sure of a great atmosphere.
Starting and finishing at the Buriram International Circuit, the marathon was founded in 2017 and is regularly attended by some of the world’s best long distance runners. Admission is open to anyone with a good pair of trainers and there is a range of different distances available.
